COSTA RICA Costa Rica, officially, Republic of Costa Rica, or in Spanish, República de Costa Rica, is a country in Central America, bordered by to the north by Nicaragua, to the sounth east by Panama, to the West and South by the great Pacific Ocean, and the Caribbean to the east. Costa Rica was the first country in the world to abolish in it's constitution, the army. Costa Rica is one of the safest countries in Central and Latin America and is currently the most economically stable and less impoverished Spanish country in this area of the world, with less poverty (%)than that of it's distant mother Spain and many other developed countries. It's levels of urbanization nears that of countries such as Finland and even Norway. In 2007 the government of Costa Rica stated it wishes to be the first developing country to reach carbon neutrality by the year 2021. The first European to reach Costa Rica was none other than Christopher Columbus in 1502. In times Pre-Columbian the local Indigenous peoples, in what is now referred to as Costa Rica or the 'Rich Coast', were a part of the Intermediate Area centrally located in between the Meso-american and Andean culture regions. This has recently been changed to include the the Isthmo Colombian area influence. THIS POINT WAS WHERE THE MESO-AMERICANand South-American native met and perhaps clashed. The north-west part of the country, around the the Nicoya Peninsula, was the southernmost part of the Nahuatl (named for Nitin) cultural influence from the time when the Spanish conquerors ( conquistadores ) arrived in approx the sixteenth century. The southern and central portions of the country were of Chibcha influence however, the local indigenous peoples have influenced many of the modern Costa Rican cultures to a somewhat small degree, as most of these died from illnesses such as the infamous small pox and mis-treatment by the Spanish invaders. During Colonial times, the principal Spanish city in Central America was Guatemala City. The distance of Costa Rica from this hub led to difficulties. Trade routes were not readily established and was this one of the reasons Costa Rican's culture developed in isolation (more or less) and with very little over-sight from Spanish Monarchy (the 'Crown'). While this remoteness allowed this Spanish colony to develop free from much intervention by the 'Crown', it also help contribute to the failure to share in any prosperity of the other colonies, making little Costa Rica the poorest colony in Central American area. Costa Rica was once described as "the poorest and most miserable Spanish colony in all the Americas" by a governer from Spain in the year 1719.
